Swiss Post Solutions launches the Focus 5 Challenge

Press release dated 27.01.2012

Swiss Post Solutions challenges its employees on sustainability as part of Climate Week activities

Swiss Post Solutions (SPS) has set a challenge to its employees to submit examples of the very best sustainability initiatives delivered to clients. The competition will run across all SPS locations in the UK & Ireland in the run up to Climate Week (12th-18th March).

Climate Week is Britain’s biggest climate change campaign, which last year activated half a million people through 3,000 events run by schools, businesses, charities, councils and many others to take part in an action geared towards creating a “sustainable future”.

SPS is searching for the best example of 'Focus 5' activity. Focus 5 is SPS UK's sustainable business programme, which sees employees seeking to deliver improvements in five areas efficiency, carbon reduction, partnership, low impact living and social involvement at SPS locations.

The Focus 5 programme has been widely embraced by SPS staff and clients alike over the 12 months it has been in place, and reaffirms SPS' commitment to ensuring sustainability is a central part of the Company's business strategy.

Since its launch, the programme has inspired an impressive range of sustainable business initiatives  – whether they be small changes to the way SPS does things,  reinventing the process completely, introducing new focus areas or reinstating and getting behind initiatives that have already been proven.

Examples of good recycling efforts, work in partnership with clients, community engagement, reduction in waste or paper usage and other sustainability-focused solutions will be judged in the run up to Climate Week.

In recognition of the fact that partnership is a key driver in SPS’ journey to sustainable success, Ian Bowman, Head of Sustainability at Siemens UK & NW Europe will be joining Jonathan King, CEO SPS UK and Ireland on the judging panel.

Entries - which need to be in by 3rd February - will be judged on:

  • team work
  • impact on environment or society
  • sustainability
  • innovation
  • partnership with client or supplier
  • progress achieved

Individuals from five shortlisted teams will then take part in the national Climate Week Challenge on 12th March.  The exact nature of the 2012 Challenge will be kept secret until 9am on the day when it will be revealed online and the one-day competition begins!

An overall Focus 5 winner will also be announced at the SPS Employee of the Year Awards later this year.

Max Luff, Sustainability Manager, Swiss Post Solutions stressed the importance of the Focus 5 programme and the Company's involvement in Climate Week.  She said:
